The Appalachian Trail
A scenic marked public footpath located in the Eastern United States that is more than 2,000 miles long conceived by by Benton MacKaye, a forester in 1921 and completed in 1937. The trail passes through fourteen states that include Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia. A unique trail that consists of mountains, forests, towns, roads and farms. More than two million people a year use some part of the trail with a small number of individuals that have hiked the trail from beginning to end. The trail is managed and maintained by the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, numerous state agencies and thousands of volunteers.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition

The Lewis and Clark Expedition also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition began in May of 1804 and ended in September of 1806. The primary purpose of the expedition appointed in 1803 by president at the time Thomas Jefferson was to explore and map the western half of the continental United States with the hope of finding a practical route to get there. as well as establishing an American presence in this territory before other foreign powers tried to claim it.

The members of the expedition team was a selected group of US Army volunteers under the command of Captain Meriwether Lewis and his good friend Second Lieutenant William Clark. The secondary objectives of this huge adventure were scientific and economic, to study the native plants, animal life, and geography and to establish trade with local American Indian tribes. The journey began on May 14, 1804 at 4:00 pm on the outskirts of St. Charles, Missouri and ended on Pacific coast. The expedition returned to to report its findings to President Jefferson, with maps, sketches and notes in hand.

Wow, you talk about adventure, imagine being the first Americans seeing majestic mountains, true wilderness and the Pacific ocean for the first time!
