The Appalachian Trail
A scenic marked public footpath located in the Eastern United States that is more than 2,000 miles long conceived by by Benton MacKaye, a forester in 1921 and completed in 1937. The trail passes through fourteen states that include Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia. A unique trail that consists of mountains, forests, towns, roads and farms. More than two million people a year use some part of the trail with a small number of individuals that have hiked the trail from beginning to end. The trail is managed and maintained by the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, numerous state agencies and thousands of volunteers.
